PORT MORESBY, July 2 – The New Caledonia men’s and Tahiti women’s teams will start the defence of their titles when Port Moresby 2015 Pacific Games basketball competition tips off at Port Moresby’s BSP Arena on July 3. In pool B, New Caledonia will face off against Papua New Guinea in its first match of the Games at 15:00 on Friday, one day before the Opening Ceremony. PNG’s men’s team is an unknown quantity as it has not competed in the last three Pacific Games. Guam and Samoa, the silver and bronze medallists from Noumea 2011, will play Tahiti and Kiribati respectively in their first matches of pool A. On the women’s side, Tahiti’s first match is against Papua New Guinea on Sunday at 17:00. While PNG did not send a women’s team to New Caledonia in 2011, it did win the bronze medal in Samoa in 2007. Fiji will be a top contender in both events as it won the men’s and women’s titles in 2007. Basketball has been contested at the Games since the first South Pacific Games in Suva, Fiji, in 1963. The men’s basketball competition starts on Friday at 09:00 the BSP Arena while the women start their quest for gold on Sunday 09:00 at the same venue. The women’s finals will take place on Saturday, July 11, while the men’s gold medal match will be played on Sunday, July 12. Basketball competition will move from the BSP Arena to the PNG Power Dome for the semifinals and finals.
