New Zealand have started their participation in the 2015 Pacific Games on a wining note by beating Solomon Islands 2 - 0.
The Solomon Islands were held off by some desperate defence by the All Whites. New Zealand opened scoring after 29 minutes through striker Monty Patterson. That goal resulted in the Solomon islands showing frustration, as Harrison Mala the midfielder, continuously found himself outnumbered in attack. And while the Solomon Islands pushed, they couldn’t find an equalizer, as New Zealands Alex Rufer, soon doubled the lead. Anatu Jnr Faárado thought he’d hit one back for his side, when Tanito laid up inside the box, however, his shot would rebound off the cross bar. Other Results Fiji drew with Vanuatu, while hosts Papua New Guinea went down 1-0 to defending champions New Caledonia. Team PNG's first win of the Games was a 24-1 victory against Kiribati in men's touch rugby, while Samoa and Fiji were among the teams to make a winning start in basketball. Table tennis, touch and basketball will continue their competitions today before the opening ceremony at the Sir John Guise Stadium. And tomorrow medals will be up for grabs in weightlifting and triathlon.
