In 25 days, Team Cook Islands will raise the national flag at the Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea.
Over the next three weeks local athletes will be putting the final touches on their game plan for the regional sports event, running from July 4 to 18 in Port Moresby. The 163-strong national sports team is made up of 130 athletes and 33 officials and will represent the Cook Islands in 13 sports codes. Each code has conducted its own planning and preparations for the sports gathering with regular monitoring from the national sports body that has set a $500,000 budget to send the team to Papua New Guinea. Codes have also fundraised individually to cover costs for the games such as athletes’ levies and at the weekend a successful Team Cook Islands ‘run-a-thon’ was held with great support shown from the community. Team Cook Islands will also attend a number of community events leading up to their staggered departure to PNG via Auckland and Australia from July 28 to 30. 2015 Team Cook Islands athletes and officials will be led by chef de mission-Robert Graham, general team manager Damien Beddoes, assistant general team manager Kurai Carfax-Foster and assistant general team manager Siniva Marsters.
