PORT MORESBY, July 15 – Vanuatu’s men’s hockey team won a close battle against Papua New Guinea that was settled on a challenge after a 6-6 draw at the BSP Stadium on Tuesday.
Hiro Namu and Ben Sam (VNU) scored in the challenge to secure an 8-6 overall victory for Vanuatu. Team captain Namu (VNU) led the charge for his men, scoring four goals in total, leaving manager George Kalkava (VNU) delighted with the win. “We had lost hope when Cyclone Pam hit us. With only three months to prepare I was not too confident but my faith in the team was not lost, and this is proven tonight,” the coach said. Both sides proved to have equal strength and stamina, so it was an all-out show of sheer determination to decide who would win. PNG goalkeeper Yahee Kusunan defended numerous hard shots from the men in red, green and yellow. PNG led 5-4 at half-time before Sam hit an equailzer. Martin Kanamon then restored the PNG lead in the final stages, but Namu bagged another equalizer late on to make it 6-6 at full-time. A challenge, where three individual players from each side take it in turns to go one-on-one against the goalkeeper, took place to decide the winner. PNG’s players faltered, missing their first two chances in the shootout, leaving Namu and Sam to score and win the challenge 2-0. GNS ee/kd
