THE Papua New Guinea men’s basketball rookie Gabriel Elavo will make his international debut at next week’s FIBA Oceania Pacific Open Championships in New Zealand.
The tournament in Porirua, Wellington is from November 27 to December 4 and will involve Australia, New Zealand Maoris and other Pacific Islands like Samoa, New Caledonia, Fiji, Guam and Tahiti. Elavo 23 of Gulf and Central parentage made the final cut in the guard position as a shooter, who averages 75 percent in the PNG men’s basketball league competition. This is a good opportunity to develop his skills and confidence in preparation for the 2015 Pacific Games. The team is made up of youth and experience with centres Joel Elavo and Apia Muri supported by Robert Kave, who will be debuting for the country in the open division. Others who are called up again are Purari Muri, Dia Muri, Wally Parapa, Sibona Kala, Mika Loko and Richard Arava while Moses Lune and Greg Travertz are travelling reserves. Players in the final teams were announced after the second training camp in Port Moresby from October 25-27. The women’s team includes live-wire Betty Angula, Nape Waka, Maka Muri, Julie-Anne Diro, Nellie Jamsop, Louisa Wallace, Emily Koivi, Nester Sape and rising stars Opa Eko, Rosa Kairi, Lyn Unagi, and former junior rep Anna Milak from Simbu, who graduates into the senior ranks Comments are closed.
