PORT MORESBY, July 2 – Team Fiji is hoping to win as many as 80 gold medals at the Port Moresby 2015 Pacific Games. Consisting of 453 athletes, team Fiji will focus on defending its titles in various sports, including rugby 9’s. Amongst other sports, the Fijians’ will be strong in men’s and women’s soccer and rugby 7’s. Its rugby 9’s team, known as Fiji Bati, will be a big drawcard as it battles to defend the Pacific Games title. Fiji Bati won the gold medal in Samoa in 2007, the last time rugby league was in the Games. In athletics, Banuve Tabakaucoro (FIJ) is set to feature strongly in the men’s 100m after clocking 10.22 seconds, a new national record, at the 2015 Oceania Championships in Cairns, Australia, in May. Fiji’s swim team includes veteran Olympians Caroline Puamau and Carl Probert who will be a valuable resource to the younger athletes while still a chance at taking gold.
