The Vodafone Fiji Bati Nines team aim to defend the gold medal at the Pacific Games in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea on July 4-18.
But coach Maika Vunivere said the mission would not be easy with stiff competition most likely to come from Papua New Guinea (PNG) and Samoa. “Our aim is to win gold again and this is possible,” Vunivere said. “We are, however, wary of PNG and Samoa as we regard them as our toughest opponents in this competition. “PNG would be toughest because they have been playing in Queensland, Australia and have included overseas-based players. “But we have been preparing accordingly and anticipate a tough and exciting roundrobin competition.” PNG, Tonga, Samoa, Cook Islands, Niue, Vanuatu and Fiji are the participating countries. The team departs on July 7. Fiji Sun
