The make shift apartment housing Chinese workers at the Pacific Games compound has caught fire. It is not yet certain what caused the fire and police are saying it is too early to speculate. “We will investigate, our officers are on the way to the area, we should not make any assumptions until after their report,” a police officer said when contacted. An eyewitness says there was nothing suspicious before the fire. “We were at the bus stand, and one of the others standing pointed at the smoke, we thought they were burning rubbish but than the smoke grew thick so we ran to the other side. “We did not hear anything, we just saw the smoke and it just spread quickly through the building.” The make shift apartment belongs to a Chinese state company, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), which won a bid to build the seven major projects for the Pacific Games, including the main stadium. The projects were being funded by the Government in Beijing for the 2023 Pacific Games in the Solomon Islands. CCECC was contacted but did not want to comment, only to say that workers were at the construction site at the time of the incident.
